In the groundbreaking movie, “Inside Out” young protagonist Riley has five personified emotions (Anger, Fear, Joy, Disgust, Sad) that lead her through her life.
Similarly, for every employee, there are four different emotions that influence their level of motivation and behavior at work. These four are:
- Mercenary : Soldier of fortune. In it to make it. My company will make me rich.
- Missionary: The priest who will endure pain for his/her faith. My person mission and my company’s mission is same.
- Learner:True nobility is being superior to your former self. I am here to become a better version of myself.
- Community:Great place to work. Culture is amazing. I have fun with my coworkers.
All of us have these four emotions which need fulfillment. One may be stronger and hungrier than rest, but all four are present. PM has to focus on all four but special interest on hungriest attribute.
So how can a PM achieve these:
I. Build products that are moonshots. On successful execution, the team will have a meaningful reward in terms of promotion and bonus.
II. Build products that solve a real customer pain.
III. Build products that are challenging and tough to implement, that require an engineer to learn new skills or improve on existing.
IV. Make friends.Bring donuts, samosas or ice-cream every other week. Go out for a beer with your engineers. Talk to them about their hobbies and interests.
